Knee Surgery
I had knee surgery over 11 years ago (when I was 15 years old) and have not had a problem with it since. I had my medical exam today and the doc said that he can't give me a "green light" until he gets a clearance letter from my orthopedic surgeon.
My question is, have any of you known anyone who has been disqualified simply becuase they have had knee surgery? And do agencies have discretion as to what is acceptable/unacceptable or does POST set the guidelines on issues of surgery?
I really hope this is not a show stopper for me. I've worked way too hard to make it this far. Your feedback would be appreciated.

I don't have an answer, but I'm also curious as to the outcome of this delima. I'm only 18, and have had surgery on both my knees. I never really thought it'd come back get me later on, I too have had no problems.
gonch- if you don't mind, what type of durgery did you have?
I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I'm just looking for info. too.

I can't speak specifically to knee surgery, but typically the agency wants you to go to your own doctor and have them certify you as fit to perform the physical requirements of the position. They are just covering their butt.

It shouldn't be an issue. Knee surgeries are pretty common these days.

I've had both knees reconstructed due to torn acl's in college.....I've heard as long as your doc signs off as to you having the mobility necessary for the job you are ok.

I'm sure everything will go well for you on mon.

WOOT!!!
I got the "thumbs up" from my surgeon yesterday. I submitted the clearance letter to the doctor that gave me the physical and now the waiting game continues. This was the last step in the hiring process for me. How long did it take you to get "the call" after your medical exam?

i think it depends on the doc that does your examination
i've had docs in the past request all my old files from my personal physician along with my ortho due to my knee surgeries and they even took extra x-rays of my knee to be sure.
but this time around, the doc was fine with my previous surgeries and even jokes with me when i told him that i had arthritis in my knee from the surgeries that i should never let an ortho doc touch me lol.
he gave me the clear to go onto the stress test and i had already passed the physical fitness aspect months ago. i received my results in the mail last week and everything was clear to go and no issues from it along with a notification from the agency to move onto the next and final test.

It won't be a problem as long as your 100% and have no restrictions. You may just have to provide documentation from a doctor stating that.
