NYPD contract
I have heard rumors that the NYPD is comparing itslef to Newark NJ, suffolk, and nassau counties police departments for its current contract. I was wondering if anyone had any info on the negotiations (battle) with the contract. I was told arbitrations started March 18, how much truth there is to that I have no idea. I know Bloomberg is crying no money for a raise, just curious if there has been any ballpark figures of a raise. Also how much does Newark NJ police make, starting salary to top pay?

Go to the PBA web site and click the 'Latest on Contract' link.
The first round of talks began on March 18 and the second will begin this month. There are also dates scheduled for May. Rumors indicate that a settlement will be announced in June (just rumors though).
Compensation 'Comparability' is the conerstone of the PBA's argument. Nassau County is only one dept the PBA is citing to illustrate the disparity in compensation. They are using a slue of area depts in the hopes of proving their point convincingly.
It is true that: 1) Nassau cops are paid enormously well, 2) They are now getting heat for it because of the fiscal crises. However, cut-bucks in the Nassau are irrelavent because the PBA is not looking for parity with them (that will NEVER happen anyway). Instead, they want a 22-percent increase . Even if the proposed cutbacks for Nassua are inacted and the PBA scores a total victory, NYPD cops still will be well under Nassau County in terms of total compensation (wages and and non-wage compensation like sick leave, vacation, holiday, medical benefits, etc.).

Nassau county makes really good money, but not even close to Suffolk county. Nassau I beleive tops out at 75,000 just base pay after five years. Suffolk county tops out at 105,000 base pay after five years.

You sure about that SC salary? Last I heard from back home, their top out (base) pay was around $85k, with Detectives making around the 105k figure as base salary.

One of my best friends is starting the Suffolk academy in two weeks. The pay chart they gave him had top pay after 5 years in the low 80's. I dont remember the exact figure. Its high, but I know it wasnt over 100K. Overtime... no doubt, but base pay Im not so sure of.

it is my understanding that SCPD currently tops at 80K (approx) but the contract they signed about a year ago has an annual increase which will bring top pay to 105K by 2003 or 2004. Ofcourse that what was in the Daily News printed awhile ago so my memory might be off.
so probably the new batch coming on now will top out at 105k since they won't have 5yrs on until after the scheduled contractual increase.
