    Federal Protective Service Hiring Process

Good day all. I am going to start this thread and base it off of how the hiring process with FPS goes for me. Hope this helps all of you out if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. I will answer whatever I can.

8/6/13-Arrived to Gurnee, IL for FPS job fair at 0632 hours. Was number 32 in line. The job fair started at 0900 and just a idea on when to get there if you want to be first, the 3rd guy in line showed up at 0150 hours. That's what I call dedication. Line went inside at 0900 they took the first 40 people and we were told about the job and what to expect for the day. Make sure you have your member 4 copy of your DD-214 not the original. If you can, get a good breakfast before you show up, or have ample snacks with you. I did not eat until I was done around 1430. You will spend a lot of time waiting just have patience and bring reading material. Please, please dress to impress. Don't turn down any locations if you are offered one. FLETC is now 27 weeks long and then you will go to field training. I received a conditional offer for Region 3 and am now waiting to began the background and medical. I currently have a TS Clearance so hopefully that will speed things up. There is a FLETC class scheduled for mid to late October, I really would like to be in that class. I will continue to update as I get further in the process.

From what I have heard, FPS recruiting for uniformed positions have shifted towards use of direct hiring authorities for veterans, particularly at job fairs on military bases, VA events, etc.

That is correct. The only jobs you will see on usajobs for FPS will be canine handler and 1811 positions.

Good day all. I am still waiting for the call from FPS to get the process started. I am wondering if there are any current FPS officers on here that can give me some insight on how this agency works. I am a current LEO with the National Park Service but there are some serious issues going on at my job right now. We have a MOU with FPS and I am able to talk to them almost every day. They only tell me the good, I wanna know everything. If there is anyone out there, your input would be greatly appreciated. Also is there anyone in the hiring process right now as well?

I'm not current FPS but can tell you the job varies greatly from region to region, and to a lesser degree even from office to office within a given region. The regional management, as well as local management if you are in an outlying office, will significantly impact the work environment. You really need to talk to people at the location for which you are being hired, because hearing great things from offices in location X does not mean the same applies in location Y. This is true in any agency, but more so in FPS because it is such a decentralized agency in most respects.

FPS is first and foremost a security agency. While its inspectors are uniformed law enforcement officers, their primary mission is managing security at federal facilities. If you don't have any interest in that aspect of the job, it may not be as satisfying to you as your current position or other FLE opportunities. Some locations are more focused on patrol and calls for service than others, though, so the balance between security specialist and policing duties also varies based on where you are assigned.

Also, if you are looking at an officer position, I assume you know they are not 6c covered. I would think very carefully about leaving a 6c covered position, particularly these days.

    Number 1

Hey Hopeful, I was number 1 in line and also got picked up. I still haven't received my processing packet in the mail yet. I called my poc the other day and was told to just be patient that it may be another 2-3 weeks before we receive it because they hired quite a few from this fair.

We were told that we would not make the october class period. That there was not enough time to have everything processed. The earliest would be in the end of February beginning of March.

Anyone wanting to know how early to get there. I got there at 0115 and stood in line.

Thanks for the update Veteran and AG123. I heard from my POC in DC that I should be hearing about my medical review by the end of this week. On Friday the 30th of August I recieved a email from the same guy in DC asking for me to have paperwork filled out by my current agency for my clearance. Due to the fact that I already have a TS with my current agency he said that will be a process that can be skipped all together. All I have to do now is get this medical stuff done. I am still hoping that I can be done before October and by some blessing be allowed to get into the October class. Again good luck to all who recieved offers. Also good luck to those who are trying to get into this agency. Never give up hope!!!! Until next time.

Quick update all, received a phone call 2 days ago and got scheduled for my physical on this coming monday. My paperwork for my clearance had been received by DHS from my agency as of yesterday so I am very optimistic about the possibility of getting into the October FLETC class. Wish me luck.

Has anyone heard anything since the medicals? With the shutdown leading into the holidays I wouldn't be surprised if we don't hear much until Jan.

Hi.. just wondering if you made to the October's FLETC? And about your clearance being sent to DHS, are you a GS employee already? I am, so I dont know if I will have to fill out all over again, or if the DHS will use the one I did in 2012 for my currently GS position (police officer).

    Thanks.
