Ice Si
I received a phone call today from ICE Detroit to schedule my structured interview. Is anything else conducted at the interview? For example, at the ATF and DEA panel, I had to provide a writing sample. Anything similar to this for ICE? Also, at the ATF panel, I was allowed to provide 5 location preferences. Is this done for ICE also? If so, does anyone know of locations that ALWAYS needs agents?
What steps follow the interview (if I'm fortunate enough to pass)?
Thanks in advance for any responses.

Congrats on getting the call for your interview. The ICE interview consist of a formal and informal interview and a writing sample. I wasn't asked to provide location choices. If you do a search, you should find some very helpful information about the interview process and some experiences.
As far as what happens next, the process varies somewhat from person to person. After I passed my interview I received a call for my medical, I then received my Tentative Offer, completed my background package, met with my investigator, background cleared and my file was sent to MN and I'm currently waiting on a training date and location. All of the above has taken place in the last seven months.
Good luck with your interview and the rest of the process.

The SI for ICE agents consists of 3 parts:
1) The written portion. I was put in a room by myself and listened to a 10 minute tape recording of an interview between an agent and an informant. The tape cannot be stopped or replayed, but you are allowed to write down notes as you listen. After the tape is over, you are given an hour to write a comprehensive report from your notes. I took my SI in Chicago, but know one of the Detroit agents who conducts the interviews, and she said not to get fancy or try and impress them with a large vocabulary. Just try to be as thorough as possible and include all the details.
2) The formal interview. Mine was done with two agents, an ASAIC and a group leader, if I remember correctly. Consists of 7? scenario based questions. You are given a copy of the questions to follow along, and they'll read off the paragraph-long scenarios one at a time. I think the answers are based on emotional maturity, compassion for other persons, and ability to communicate your response.
3) The informal interview. I can't offer much about this...at the beginning of my formal interview, they said that after the scenarios they'd do some informal questions about my education and experience. Well, after the formal section, we sat and talked for about 20 minutes, but not about my qualifications. I asked them a bunch of questions about the job, etc., and our interaction seemed (to me at least) to be going really well. As we came to a close, I asked if they still had the informal questions to ask me, and one of them said "I don't think that'll be necessary." I’m still totally freaked out by that…I can’t decide if it’s a good thing or a very bad thing.
Anyway, that’s the SI in a nutshell. It wasn’t terribly hard…I think the TEA was the more challenging of the two. They did not ask me for geographic preferences, but – if my understanding is correct – you are only eligible to be selected in the region where you interviewed, and will be placed at the SAIC office or one of its RAICs. After the SI, you are supposed to receive a tentative offer, meaning you have a job as long as you can pass the BI, medical exam, and drug screening. After those are cleared, you wait for a phone call making you a firm offer of employment. Good luck!

Unlike Mizzou80, for my writing sample I was told that I could stop and rewind the tape as many times as I wanted. I just had to be sure I finished in the hour alotted.
Also, my structured interview and my personal interview were scheduled on separate days about a week apart.

I had all three in the same day, starting with the informal. I was in there with the SAC and 3 RACs. Sounds intimidating, but they were very friendly and made me feel comfortable...I even took off my shoes and put my feet up on the table. We talked about work history, the merger and some other things that are similar to regular job interviews. I'm glad I had that interview first because it made me feel good for the written and structured. Structured and written were just as mizzou80 stated. Wear a watch so you can keep track of your time during the written because the person who did my SI came in about half way through and said the timer was not set and if I knew how much time I had left...whew...good thing I had my watch dial set! I also was not allowed to stop the tape or rewind it. I think Jerseygirl's situation was an anomaly so don't expect to stop and rewind. Do what I did and sneak a tape recorder in...tape the tape...then stop and rewind YOUR copy. They never said anything about not stopping or rewinding YOUR copy!
p.s.
kidding about the tape
and good luck.

There was a tape? They gave me headphones and told me to be quiet because they were doing an interview in the next room.....maybe THAT"s why they were all giggling so much

SAY WHAT!!!
That would have been nice, I would have appreciated that. I was allowed to take notes, but at one point between the number, dates and times being mentioned I got a bit turned around.
I guess it turned out ok in the end as I passed the SI."For me, to live is Christ, to die is gain."
Phil 1:21
