Hey - I haven't been able to get a straight answer anywhere else, even from a USCP officer... Does anyone know what (if anything) Officers pay into retirement? I see you retire in 20 years, but it doesn't have a percentage or anything... I was just curious what kind of contribution was necessary from officers every pay period, and what the retirement works out to be.

Also, does anyone know how much officers pay for single health insurance?

Lastly, what (if any) other deductions do officers usually have from their paychecks (besides taxes and the like)? I'm just trying to get a feel for what a paycheck might look like if I get the job.

I called the recruiting number, and the lady wasn't exactly helpful, so I'm turning to other means for my answers. Thanks a lot for any help you can give me!

im a bit confused. do you mean cbpo (u.s. customs and border protection officer)? if so, it is not a 20 year retirement, the amount you pay a month for health insurance is dependent on which plan you choose and the deductions also is dependent on you and your location. of course you will pay federal taxes, but not all states have state/local taxes. basically, your question really cant be answered easily because there are so many variables. another variable is where you will stationed (locality pay) and the gs grade at the time of hire.

USCP = United States Capitol Police. I know there are fed taxes and state/local taxes. I was wondering about any other deductions that all officers have... union dues, average health insurance cost, pension contributions, that kind of stuff.

I hope to have these questions answered on Friday myself. I'll try to get you some info when I get it if nobody does before hand

To get an idea of insurance costs, you can look at the Federal Employee Health Benefits program website probably accessible off of the main OPM site.

As far as union dues, I'm not sure if USCP is represented but USPP and USSS/UD were represented by FOP and the dues were $$$. You will also pay into the retirement program, and this percentage can also be found on OPM.

    Benefits

    20 yr retirement equals out to about 1.5% - 2% a yr.
30 yr retirement equals about 1% a yr = 30% for 30yrs ( invest in TSP if you want to survive after retirement)
BCBS in the DC area is $55 for single and $115 for married.
Union dues are usually around $15 to $18 dollars a pay period, but I suggest you do your homework before you enroll into a union... most are rip offs and don't do much for you and it takes a full year before you can opt out.

    Hope this helps.

Health insurance is going to depend on which plan you choose. Most single officers I know use Blue Cross Blue Shield standard which is about 50 dollars per pay period. But there are cheaper plans out there if you want to use an HMO.

FERS Retirement is about 24 dollars per par period and increases with your pay. TSP is on you and is matched by the govt if you contribute up to 5%.

The only other deductions are for life insurance and thats optional.

Thanks for the replies. That helps out a bit. I finally got ahold of a buddy of mine this morning who works for USCP, and he filled me in a little bit. If I get hired I will definitely be taking home more than my present or last jobs, the only thing that will suck is not having a take home car, because I don't plan on living any closer than 45 minutes or so away from DC... could potentially be heavy on the wallet with gas costs... Thanks guys.

"45 minutes or so away from DC" will put you roughly 8 miles away. You might also consider taking the train, which is cheaper and usually at least partly reimbursed by the Government.

I live 32 miles from capitol hill and it takes me about 40 minutes on average. But I work 1500 to 2300 so I miss most of the traffic. If you work during the day, see above post.

i lived in alexandria which is 15 miles away and 20 minutes no traffic. on a wednesday you are talking at least an hour at rush hour. take the metro, uscp will give you a hundred bucks a month for it, which will pay for parking and most metro stations will let you on for free if you have your gun (i.e. they can take one of their officers off the teain and put him/her on another train)

6c is 1.7% for the first 20 years and 1% per year after that.

Thrift Savings Program - sort of like 401K for the G. You contribute and the G matches (up to 5%). There was a restriction on the percentage you put into it but I believe this was recently removed and now it is capped by dollar amount per annum.
