FHP--Paid Detail?
hello everyone...currently nypdinthe process for FHP...just wondering...is there something similar paid detail at FHP? For those who don'tknow or maybe it's called something else where you work...Paid Detail is when you are basically "sub-contracted" to a business....you are off duty in uniform getting paid by the vendor(ex.: sports games, movie theaters, banks, etc.). here it's $30/hour -po/det....sgts get 38 and Lts. get about 42...the city takes a share ...i've heard $10/hour some say it's 10% of total... i dont know ...anyway if FHP has it where do you work (what's available) and also what does it pay?...thank you for the info.

Have a buddy with a FHP - last time we spoke it sounded like $40 an hour -- sitting in your car at highway construction sites or highway rest area "patrol"
Paid detail thing up here sucks brother - 2 months or more usually before you get paid?? sucks -- Can only book details every other month or so when your academy class date comes up? sucks -- It's better than nothing having the option to do it, but it could be a whole lot better
Also keep in mind, unless it has changed, FHP gets paid once per month, not bi-weekly -- Also your salary will remain the same indefintely -- you will make up a bit, not having to pay state, local, etc.. tax - but keep that all in mind brother -- It was a career I looked at years ago myself and still have interest, but that pay is just not right, especially since it never goes up.

On the academy note -I am assuming you have some time in with the NYPD - just with your mention of the paid detail unti here -- if so, you might get into the abbreviated academy for "lateral" hires - much shorter than the regualr academy

from the way I read it you have to have that state cross over certification done first then you can go through the FHP 10 week course instead of the original 26 week course. I htink the prior police course in this state is a 4 week course since my fellow Mp's co workers have been doing. I can't do it b/c I don't have the time for it and my work schedule is the same as those courses. what has FHP told you as far as being a cop and goign through there 10 week course? is their 10 week course suppose to be as hard as the 26 week for newbies or more lay back?

from what i have gathered you can do one of many things:
1)go on your own dime to an approved college and take the "academy style" program (course, physical training, etc.) that prepares you for the test, then take the test and pass it...you are then CERTIFIED.
2)be current law enforcement...certified in florida or
3)be current law enforcement out of state....get your training records reviewed by FDLE via submition via one of these colleges....to see if they would accept your training...then you would just take the state exam...after you study for it of course...there are also some one week "crash" couses for those who's records have been ok'd to take the test..
but the florida highway patrol told me that THEY would submitted the records for me or review them something like that to see if i qualify to take the test and get certified. my friend told me that the first 4 months in academy are pretty much preparing you for the test...
any way this is as much as ive gathered from various sources.

once and a while i see some FHP officers at the local movie theather...
The wait for FHP is soo slow!!! I read in a news article last week in a local paper that FHP will be hireing over 400 Officers within the next 7 years due to the fact that they are loosing around 9 a month to other departments. I just got a call to go take my Psychological Screening

i know...
i was looking around at local departments and it's insane.....more $$$ and benefits....i've even seen "signing bonus" of up to 2,000 dollars!!! lol (coral springs p.d. in case you were wondering) and they will reimburse you up to 500 dollars for expenses during the application process...i dont know but FHP better get their things straight...add a pay scale and make it competitive (not just say it's "competitive" on their website/pamphlets), add more benefits...ex.: shift pay, longevity pay, include these things in the retirement calculations too (currently ONLY your base payis calcultated for retirement not over time)......yeeesh...they are making me have second thoughts....lol

Brother - just take a look at departments such as coral gables -- top pay is around $62,000 -- ft lauderdale also and broward county -- in general look at the state law enforcement officers pay "scales" - they are not too good - even as a special agent with fdle you're only looking at $44,000 a year tops -- and for that job you have to have investigative experience, etc.... and they are the "top" law enforcement agency in the state --
