North Shore Drug Dealer Receives Life Sentence In Federal Court For Trying To Murder A Federal Agent
AUG 8 -- (New Orleans, Louisiana) – William J. Renton, Jr., Special Agent in Charge of the New Orleans Field Division, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Jim Letten, United States Attorney, Eastern District of Louisiana, today announced CHRIS WALKER, age 33, a resident of Tangipahoa Parish, was sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in a plot to murder a Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent.
In January, 2006, DEA Special Agents learned of a plot to kill DEA Special Agent Chad Scott from cooperating defendants in jail. These cooperating defendants indicated that CHRIS WALKER, a drug dealer who Agent Scott had arrested shortly after Hurricane Katrina, was looking to hire a hit man to carry out this murder. Agents set up a sting operation in which an undercover agent posing as the hit man was introduced to WALKER and his associates. WALKER then reached out to Johnnie Sims, a drug associate, to pay the undercover agent to kill Special Agent Scott. Sims contacted and met twice with the undercover agent. During the second meeting, Sims identified a picture of Agent Scott and stated that he wanted the murder carried out as soon as possible. He also gave the undercover agent $1,000. Shortly after this meeting, agents arrested Sims. Sims subsequently agreed to cooperate with law enforcement authorities and admitted his role in the plot to murder Special Agent Scott. WALKER and Sims were indicted by a Federal Grand Jury in September, 2006 with conspiracy to distribute cocaine base, conspiracy to murder a federal agent, solicitation to murder a federal informant, and federal firearms violations. The Government also charged WALKER as a repeat offender. Both WALKER and Sims eventually pled guilty to the charges in the indictment.
At WALKER’S sentencing hearing conducted today before United States District Judge Carl Barbier, WALKER was sentenced to a mandatory life sentence in federal prison.
DEA Special Agent in Charge William J. Renton stated:
“Today’s sentencing is an indication of the consequences that can befall any individual who even thinks about perpetrating an act of violence on a federal agent. Federal law enforcement will use any means necessary to insure the safety of their agents and our colleagues in state and local law enforcement.â€Â
Sims is currently awaiting sentencing on September 5, 2007 at 1:30 P.M.
This investigation was conducted by Special Agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration and the case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Maurice E. Landrieu, Jr.
