Police Officer Arrested for Drunk Driving
A Shelby Township police officer is accused of drinking and driving, and then getting into a skirmish with another officer. It took three deputies to take the suspect into custody.
The incident occurred in a subdivision near 25 Mile Rd. and Romeo Plank. Investigators say 29-year-old Jason Armstrong, an off duty Shelby Township police officer, was found intoxicated and slumped over the wheel of his Ford Explorer, with the SUV running.
After someone called and reported the SUV in the road, a Macomb Co. sheriff’s deputy went to investigate the scene.
Macomb Co. Sheriff Mark Hackel explained in a press conference, "As he attempted to reach in and grab the keys, the subject woke up and was obviously intoxicated. He became somewhat unnerved by that. There was a confrontation that took place, between the officer and the subject."
Investigators say the deputy at the scene wrestled with Armstrong, to try and get him out of the SUV, and then called for backup. With the help of two others, Armstrong, who is a 4-year veteran of the Shelby Township Police Department, was arrested.
According to Keith Robert Leman, of the Shelby Township Police, "He’s an excellent officer. I haven’t had any problems with him. No discipline problems. He’s one of my better officers, to be honest with you."
Police have not released Armstrong’s blood alcohol level. He was released on personal bond Monday night. As the investigation continues, Armstrong has been put on administrative duty. You may know where you are and what you're doing, God may know where you are and what you're doing, but if the dispatcher doesn't know where you are and what you're doing; you better have a good relationship with God.
