Well I remember back in the 70's, we would read in the NJ PBA newsletter that some NJ MOS had been arrested for a "minor gun charge" in NYC.
We knew what it was about.

Other than those few, it was the same way in NJ.
I can still remember that at least once every summer, some Arkansas trooper or similar on vacation in NYC would get involved in breaking something up and though mentioned, a weapon was never an issue.
I think the words one of the Loo's said were on the order of "We don't care if you carry a bazooka!"
