    Timeframe/ hiring process question...

I applied for a position as an emergency services specialist/911 operator and have been going through the hiring process for a while and I'm wondering about how much longer I have to go before they make a decision on me.

    So far I have done:
    The criticall test
    Board interview
    Polygraph test
    Psych test and interview
    Background investigation and interviews

I also just scheduled an interview with the chief of police for next friday. As far as i know the fact that they have continued with these steps means I'm being considered for the position still, but I was wondering how many more steps were left to go...

My main concern is my current job (retail management). They know I'm in this process and have been very accommodating and understanding and I would like to be able to keep them updated on how much time they will have with me heading into the Christmas season.

    PrimeTimeGuru,

Each agency is different; therefore, I can only provide you with my experience for one of the agencies I applied. Unlike you, I did not have an interview with the chief of police.

I was informed by a couple of agencies not to provide a resignation to a current employer until such time the final offer (not a conditional offer of employment) is received. Once the final offer is received, then the start date would be two or more weeks later for the agency I applied.

Below are the sequence of my events that I hope assists you.

    Day 01: Application.
    Day 54: Written Test.
    Day 83: 3-Panel Interview.
    Day 94: Background Interview.
    Day 96: Polygraph.
    Day 101: Sit Along.
    Day 119: Ride Along.
Day 144: Chief approved and approval sent to HR.
Day 152: Conditional Offer received. Medical Exam completed.
    Day 159: Psych Test completed.
    Day 166: Offer Received.

As far as updating your employer for the holiday schedule, I can only suggest providing any information you currently have at this point. It appears you are almost finished and I hope the interview with the chief of police goes well.

I am actually in the hiring process for the Police Department and am waiting for a conditional offer myself. How long did you have to wait for them to contact you as far as the whole process to where you are now? Good luck with everything seems like it is just a matter of time for you.

I applied for the position in early August so it's been around 3 months total. I took the criticall exam mid August, interviewed and took psych exams and polygraphs in September and early October. The background took most of October with the at home interview and calls to my references. Now here we are in November and I have the chief interview this Friday.

In my experience from application date to official offer, was 9 months. The process was a lot slower (spread apart) in the beginning and each item was closer and closer to one another towards the end.
