In Colorado probation officers aren't considered peace officers. They aren't armed and don't make arrests. Parole officers employed by the Colorado Dept. of Corrections are peace officers. Probation officers in Colorado are employed by the judicial branch so they are focused on case management, pre sentence investigations etc. Most people hired by them have a human services counseling type background rather than law enforcement. They do home visits on their clients but are usually accompanied by a police officer, whereas parole officers handle their own contacts. It's a good job that's important to the system but definitely very far from traditional law enforcement.
