    Officer Safety Alert: Fentanyl

The Drug Enforcement Administration has released an important video and information sheets on the threat to law enforcement officers from the drug Fentanyl. Far more potent than heroin and illicitly manufactured in Mexico and China, it is being found by itself as well as added to heroin, meth, cocaine and reportedly even in some marijuana. Agencies around the country where it is appearing are deploying the opioid recovery drug, Naloxone, as an officer safety measure. In bulk, it is typically packaged the same a kilogram quantity of cocaine. Like bath salts and synthetics it can be and is altered at a molecular level to avoid both testing and scheduling. It may yield a false positive for meth, but no field test is proving our yet. Recently 48 kilograms was recovered in Georgia with all involved, including the recovering officers believing it was cocaine. Please review these links:

Symptoms of opiate/opioid overdose mimic those of an acute hypoglycemic (low sugar) event; which include less than 10 breaths per minute and/or snoring respirations, extreme fatigue, responsive to painful stimulation but not responsive to verbal stimulation. If you or one of your team members suddenly feels/presents {with} these symptoms, slam the Narcan. It won't hurt if they don't need it. If they don't respond appropriately within 1-3 minutes, there may be a sugar/diabetic issue and you'd need EMS to slam some IV sugar. DISCLAIMER: Consult your agency Medical Director/Physician before performing any of these described procedures if mandated by law...
    Stay safe!
